Phase II Environmental Site Assessments
A Phase II environmental site assessment (ESA) is typically conducted to investigate and quantify, if possible, the presence or absence of suspected contamination associated with RECs identified during a Phase I ESA. A Phase II ESA can also be conducted to define baseline levels of contamination, fill data gaps critical to problem resolution, and define the scope and cost of cleanups. A Phase II ESA can involve non-invasive approaches such as surface geophysical surveys to locate underground structures and contaminant plumes; or invasive investigation of source areas and ground water, making use of soil borings, monitoring wells and laboratory analyses, if necessary.
