Direct & Indirect Exposure Risk Assessments for Combustion Emission Sources

Horizon has completed a comprehensive multiple-route risk assessment evaluating the potential risks associated with direct and indirect exposures to emissions from hazardous-waste fired cement kiln. Atmospheric dispersion and deposition modeling was performed to estimate the initial fate and transport of chemicals emitted from the facility. Using the estimated airborne concentrations and deposition rates, Horizon estimated the fate and transport of chemicals in: 1) soils; 2) the terrestrial food chain (i.e., plants and animals); and, 3) the aquatic food chain (i.e., bioaccumulation by fish). Indirect human exposure risks were then predicted by estimating the magnitude of potential human exposure via consumption of meat/dairy products, vegetables, and fish. Direct exposure risks were estimated by evaluating human inhalation exposures to the predicted airborne concentrations.
