Ecological Risk Assessments
Horizon completed both qualitative and quantitative ecological risk assessments for Superfund sites and Combustion Emission Sources. These work efforts have included development and implementation of sediment assessment work plans to provide for characterization of soft sediments via the sediment triad assessment approach (chemistry, toxicity, and species diversity/abundance).
Horizon has also developed and coordinated implementation of a strategy that would allow for the development of water quality criteria for a chemical which had no previous aquatic criteria. Horizon assisted a client in the development of a limited data set of acute aquatic toxicity studies. Horizon used the results of these aquatic studies to calculate Tier II Final Acute Values as well as Tier II Final Chronic Values. The results of the aquatic toxicity tests and Horizon’s calculations were submitted to the state environmental agency and received approval without comment.
