Treatability / Pilot Testing of Treatment Technologies

Where necessary to establish the efficacy of innovative technologies or to establish design parameters for a remediation system in a particular geologic/hydrogeologic setting, Horizon’s engineers and field personnel will perform bench- and/or pilot-scale testing of treatment technologies. Our experience in bench-scale treatability testing includes evaluation of metals precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption using activated carbon and specialty adsorbents, as well as air and steam stripping for water treatment. Particular emphasis is placed on accomplishing bench-scale testing in a manner that allows the results of the bench-scale testing to be scaled up to full scale application of the technology.

In addition, Horizon’s engineers and field personnel have extensive experience in pilot-scale testing of soil and groundwater treatment technologies. Pilot-scale testing is commonly completed in support of preliminary and detailed design of in situ soil and groundwater treatment systems (e.g., soil vapor extraction, air sparging). Pilot-scale testing is accomplished to establish design parameters (e.g., radius of influence of extraction or injection wells) which, in turn, are used to size full-scale treatment equipment.
