Karen M. Hathaway, Senior Project Toxicologist, has 18 years of experience in environmental compliance/risk assessment projects. Ms. Hathaway uses risk assessment methods to assist clients with the requirements of various state and Federal regulatory programs including CERCLA, RCRA and Michigan’s Act 451. She is also involved in the development of site investigation work plans and remedial action plans. Her knowledge of toxicology and the various environmental regulations has benefited clients on a wide variety of environmental compliance issues including air and hazardous waste permits, RCRA corrective actions, RCRA closure plans, hazard ranking evaluations, hazard identification training programs, site assessments, audits, NPDES permits and ground water discharge permits. She has used U.S. EPA Benchmark Dose Software (the current best practice for setting standards for human health effects) to calculate carcinogenic slope factors and non-carcinogenic reference doses which were then used to calculate site-specific cleanup criteria for a chemical which had no previous cleanup criteria. Unique compliance experiences have included the preparation and coordination of pre-demolition sampling and analysis activities for large industrial facilities; and the preparation, presentation and oversight of environmental hazard screening programs for both a national forest and the City of Detroit.

Ms. Hathaway earned her M.S. in Environmental Toxicology from the University of Wisconsin and her B.A. in Biology from Kalamazoo College.
